Nikolai Tioply ( the exhibition
consists mainly of his works
) organized the show in memory
of his teacher Nikolai Kovalenko.
This dialogue of times and
creative individualities produces
a certain" tension field
" which gives birth to
the feeling of both singularity
of the event and the success
of the moral and expositional
principle found by N. Tioply...
Nikolai Mironovich Kovalenko
wos 75 when they met in 1978.
Times were becoming difficult
for the elderly painter :
he painted a lot and often
exhibited his pictures, but
not all of them could present
a very special, complex and
in a way tragic talent, he
considerably owed to P. N.
Filonov, at its full.
The old master found a true
friend and an attentive pupil
in the young painter Nikolai
Tioply who was eager to master
the fundamentals of plastic
and painting structures.
Filonov`s principle of "pure
active form" , his "motion
resulting from the free will
of things in themselves"
( M. Matjushin`s words about
P. Filonov ) - all this was
close to N. Tioply`s quest
already in his youth.
So both the opinion of Nikolai
Kovalenko, "the old Filonovian",
and his example sometimes
helped the young painter find
himself in serious tradition
of St. Petersburg painting...
This, so to say, madieval
guild brotherhood of the old
and young painters was fruitful
for both of them. There are
coloured drawings that display
the thouch of the hands of
both.
To my mind P. Filonov`s traditions
and advice from N. Kovalenko,
who managed to get lessons
from other brilliant painters
including M. Bojchuk, helped
N. Tioply to strengthen confidence
in the unity of pure form
and deep philosophical sense
as the unity of pure form
and a person's pain overcome
by the harmony that is a plastic
"finality" aspiring
to approach the catarsis of
the ancient... Abstract painting
creates tempting opportunities
for pseudo - artistic mystification:
an unexperienced spectator
is unlikely to tell the balanced
harmony of the non representational
art classics from the dexterous
imitator`s works. Unfortunately
bold combinations of sports
are easily passed for "modern
art". N. Tioply`s pictures
and drawings are visual proof
of the fact theh a non - figurative
picture can be filled with
logic and sense hardly touching
the material world. His quest
is persistent and often very
fruitful, in his painting
there oppears a clot of colour
and plastic energy, "a
genetic code" allowing
in a small canvas to guess
a compressed universe, ready
to split far away from the
picture plane. In his best
works you can see resolute
movement, dissatisfaction
and a long - standing, worthy
desire to combine the lessons
of his brilliant teachers
with his own independent vision,
with his own plastic world...
